Orchard is located at the central area of Singapore. The east and north side of this region borders Newton. The west side of the region borders Tangline while the south part borders the River valley. Orchard region has its southern east side bordering the museum. Its geographical location makes it strategic for modern projects. The region is home for Orchard road whose name originated from the nutmerg, fruits as well as pepper. These makes up the plantation to which the road led to. The plantations were common in the past years basically in the 19th century. In connection to this, other historical sources link the name to the gardener who was the owner of the plantation. The gardener went by the name Mr. Orchard. Orchard road served as a two-way traffic in more than a century. In the year 1974, some developments were made and the road was advanced to a one-way traffic. This facilitated flow of traffic and eased congestion in the highway.
The region is home to a prestigious hotel known as the Orchard Hotel. The hotel lays along a busy street that extends along the junction where the street joints the orange grove road. Other major roads around this area includes the Scotts Road–Paterson Hill junction, Bideford Road not forgetting Orchard MRT Station among many others. Beside these major roads, the region is famous with other special amenities. This includes the underground pedestrian foot paths in between the malls. This helps pedestrians walk underneath the streets making it safe for them. The year 2010 saw the region experience flash floods at the orchard roads. This was experienced in the month of June where rain fell from 8am to 11 am. The floods greatly affected the malls along the orchard road. These malls included Lucky Plaza and Liat Towers. The floods submerged some of the basements as well as car parks. The floods left some victims with memorable injuries. Orchard among other cities have a proper record of the past happenings and have a great potential in Singapore. Past experiences and current happenings are a true testimony that it is a growing region.
