Simei is a subzone of Tampines. Tampines is one of the East Region planning areas of Singapore. The subzone covers 2.78 square kilometers and is populated by more than 42,000 people as indicated in the 2015 census. All the subzones of Tampines planning area are Tampines West, Simei, Tampines East, Xilin and Tampines North. The subzone was initially known as Tampines South and was renamed to Simei in 1985’. The name Simei means ‘four beauties’ in Chinese Pinyin Before the current developments in Simei, the region used to be an urban slum area which was made up of several slum villages of the Malay people. The villages were known as kampongs, and they were cleared in 1982 when the new town projects began. The project included construction of HDB estates which were fully equipped with social amenities and roads. At the time, the roads were named after the legendary Chinese ‘four beauties’ that include Xi Shi, Yang Guifei, Zhaojun, and Diochan. After several complaints about the complexity of the naming system, the road names were changed gradually over the years.
Now, the region has matured estate full of residential precincts, social amenities, and facilities. There are amenities like shopping facilities such as East Point Mall, NTUC Fair Price Supermarket, 7-11 Convenience Store and Cheers Store. The only park in the subzone is Simei Park which has a running track, a playground and also a fitness center. Changi General Hospital caters for the medical needs of the residents. The housing systems in the region are mansions, private and public flats, and condominiums and they are spread across the area. The region is also well equipped with transport systems which efficiently serve the residents. There are systems like the Simei MRT Station and public bus services. Residents can also access Singapore Changi Airport through the Pan-Island Expressway Simei is a fully functional mature town which is best suited for residency. There are numerous roads, an airport, rail stations, and even schools to support this. It also hosts one of the major hospitals in the planning area which serve the residents of the whole East Region.
